IAAF Council meet in Berlin, recommends 2010 events host cities

The IAAF Council met yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel, Berlin, the IAAF Headquarters for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15–23 August 2009).

President Lamine Diack made the official opening address of this one day meeting and was followed by the General Secretary Pierre Weiss, and Honorary Treasurer, Jean Poczobut, who delivered their reports.

The Cross Country Committee (following its meeting on 29 March 2009 in Amman, Jordan) and the Masters' Committee (following its meeting on 25 April 2009 in Monte Carlo, Monaco) presented reports.

The final Progress Report from the Organising Committee of the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany was made, with news that ticket sales have now exceeded 300,000 for the nine days of competition.

There was discussion about the forthcoming 47th IAAF Congress (11-13 August 2009), which opens this evening in Berlin’s Tempodrom, and regarding the IAAF Council/IOC Executive Board Meeting scheduled for Friday 14 August 2009.

The main highlights was the decision by Council to recommend to the 47th IAAF Congress that the IAAF World Cross Country Championships change from their traditional annual format and are staged biennially.

  • 38th IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Bydgoszcz, Poland – 28 March 2010

Timetable approved: 12:00 Junior Women; 12:30 Junior Men; 13:15 Senior Women; 14:10 Senior Men

  • 24th IAAF World Race Walking Cup – Chihuahua, Mexico – 15/16 May 2010

Timetable approved: 15 May - 08:00 50km Men; 16:30 10km Junior Men; 17:30 20km Women. 16 May - 09:00 10km Junior Women; 10:10 20km Men

  • 13th IAAF World Junior Championships – Moncton, Canada – 19-25 July 2010
  • Youth Olympic Games - 2010 Singapore
  • International Cross Country and Road Running Officials (ICROS)
