26 November, 2006. Former double Olympic distance champion Hicham El-Guerrouj is to stand for the presidency of the Moroccan Athletics Federation, reports the Eurosport .Com. El-Guerrouj has been out of competitive action since winning the 1500m and 5000m titles in Athens two years ago and retired from the sport a year later. "I have decided to put myself forward for the candidature," the 32-year-old said. "I would like to put something back into my sport, my country." "Athletics is my passion, my life," he continued. "It has given me a lot, and I want to give something back to it, to participate in the development of Morocco and to give a chance to the youngsters." "It has been 20 years since I started to prepare for the Olympic Games, during which Morocco was going though a difficult period where competition was forbidden. "Today, it is possible. Morocco is moving at a great pace and Athletics has to move with it." He will formally present his application to the federation on December 4th and is hoping to be involved "for the long-term."
26 July, 2006. Algerian Nima Issam has set a new national Long Jump record, report Chafik Boukabes for the IAAF. The 27-year–old, finalist at the 11th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow in March, wiped out his previous best (8.13m) set in Helsinki in 2005 with a leap of 8.17m (0.0m/s) at the 44th Algerian championships which took place in Algiers on the 19th - 20th July. Issam also won the men's 100m in 10.56 seconds. Madi Nabil retained the 800m title in 1:45.89 with Boukensa Tarek second in 1:46.10.
11 June, 2006. Sudanese teenager Abubaker Kaki has set a new national junior record (1:45.78) at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex during the Moroccan Olympic meeting in Rabat, reports IAAF's Mohammed Benchrif. Kaki, 16, finished strongly to place second in a race won by Saudi's Mohammed Al Salhi, who ran 1:44.40 - the best 800m time of the year. Young Moroccan athlete Said Doulal, who ran 3:39.42 at 1500m in the meeting du Raja de Casablanca recently, came third in 1:46.53. Doulal, is supervised by Abdelkader Kada, the coach of the now retired World and Olympic 1500m champion Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco.

The Moroccan Royal Athletics Federation has announced a team of 25 athletes to represent the North African nation at the 10th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki, reports IAAF's Mohammed Benchrif. The competition runs in the Finnish city from the 6th–14th August 2005. The team made up of 18 men and 7 women are: MEN 800m: Laalou Amine; Chehibi Mohcine. 1500m: Kaouch Adil; Baba Youssef; Bensghir Yassine. 5000m: Goumri Abderrahim; Bellani Hicham; Amyn Mohamed. 10,000m: Goumri Abderrahim; Amyn Mohamed; El Amri Khalid. 3000m Steeplechase: Boulami Brahim Ezzine Hamid. Marathon: Gharib Jaouad; El Boumlili Khalid; Laaroussi Zaid; Lamaachi Abdelkebir; Bouramdane Abderrahim. Long Jump: Berrabah Yahya. Triple Jump: Bouguetaib Tarik. WOMEN 800m: Benhassi Hasna; Ait Hammou Mina; Ait Hammou Seltana. 3000m steeplechase: Chaabi Bouchra. Marathon: El Kamch Zhor; Wahbi Kenza; Naghmouch Hafida. 26 May, 2005. 18 Moroccan youths (6 girls and 12 boys) have already qualified for the World Youth Championships taking place in Marrakech. The Moroccan Royal Athletic Federation intends to be represented by an important number of youth athleteS and several qualifying competitions are to be held prior to the deadline for qualification, reports IAAF's Mohammed Benchrif. "Two years ago in Sherbrooke, Morocco had a great start of the competition with Siham Hilali winning the 3000m, the opening event of the Championships which had been scheduled by the organizers as part of the opening ceremony," wrote Benchrif. 18 April 2005. Tunisia's Rachid Amour clocked 1:01:53 and set a national record yesterday in a Half Marathon in Brugnera, a little place near Pordenone in Northern Italy, reports IAAF. The previous record was 1:02:10, set by Ridha El Amri last year. Amour, who had a previous PB 1:02:47, out-sprinted little-known Kenya's Paul Kipkemei Kogo by 1 second. Kogo and the other two Kenyans behind him, set a PB as well. Amour told Alberto Zorzi for the IAAF: "I'm very satisfied, it was a perfect race. "The weather conditions were really good, the course was completely flat, and very flat was also the pace." MOROCCO
El Guerrouj and Bidouane to captain Moroccan team in Athens 8 August 2004. A team composed of 15 men and 8 women will represent Morocco at the Athens Olympics. According to IAAF freelance Mohammed Benchrif, they will have as team captains, quadruple World 1500m champion Hicham El Guerrouj, and the former double women’s 400m Hurdles champion Nezha Bidouane, respectively. Egypt earned their second gold medal of the African Athletics championship in Brazzaville when Marwa Ahmed Hussein retained her title in the women's Hammer Throw, improving her own African record (65.26 – 2003) to 66.14m, according to IAAF Mark Ouma. The mark also bettered her championship record of 61.64, which she set two years ago in Tunis. Hussein trains at the IAAF Accredited Training Centre (ATC) in Szombathely, Hungary, which has been the legendary base for so many of the world's greatest hammer throwers this century. It was at the centre last year that Hussein set the previous African record.
