South African sprinter Akani Simbine shattered the World University Games 100m record at the 28th Universiade in the Korean city of Gwangju on Thursday.
Simbine, who clocked a Games record of 10.00 prior in the semi-final, lowered it to 9.97 seconds to win the final gold medal in completely still conditions.
Akani Simbine took 0.02 seconds off his lifetime best, set last week in Velenje and equalled the South African record set four days earlier by Henricho Bruintjies.
Jamaica’s Kemarley Brown took the silver medal in 10.12 with Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev settling for bronze in 10.16 seconds.
