Kenyan Evans Chebet won the 126th Boston Marathon men’s title, clocking a time of 2:06:51 for his first Abbott World Marathon Majors victory on Monday 18 April, 2022.
Chebet ran the eighth-fastest time in Boston Marathon history to bury the ghost of crashing out from the Boston Marathon in 2018 – his lone other attempt at the Hopkinton-to-Boston course.
Chebet has completed three other Abbott World Marathon Majors: the TCS London Marathon in 2021; the Tokyo Marathon in 2017; and the BMW Berlin Marathon in 2016.
His compatriots, 2019 Boston winner Lawrence Cherono (2:07:21) and 2021 champion Benson Kipruto (2:07:27), completed the podium in second and third positions respectively.
In the professional women’s category, Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir won her Boston Marathon debut in a time of 2:21:01.
Jepchirchir became the first athlete in history to have won the Boston, New York City, and Olympic Marathon titles, and the fifth Olympic marathon champion to win in Boston.
Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh finished four seconds behind in second place with 2:21:05 while Mary Ngugi from Kenya was third in 2:21:32.
The 2022 Boston Marathon race was the sixth-closest finish in women’s race history.
