Mato stays hot as Ghanaian athletes gain momentum

Lydia Mato continues to dominate all races she competed in from 1500m to 10000m, and the latest Ghana Athletics Association rankings for Ghanaian athletes.

The weekend of May 17th has come and passed, but with it came Lydia Mato continuing what she is best known for: sprinting in the long distance races.

At the NJCAA National Championships, [link id=”746″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Lydia Mato”] won all three races she competed in (the 10000m, the 5000m, and the 1500m) all in lifetime personal best times to add three more national championship gold medals to her already innumerable haul.

This was a few days after she smashed the 23-year old national record in the 3,000m.

Meanwhile, four of [link id=”7″ tax=”category” text=”Ghana”]’s sprinters began to shift their gears to “fast”.

[link id=”641″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Flings Owusu-Agyapong”]’s fastest-ever time of 11.16s was just outside Vida Nsiah’s national record of 11.14s set in 2004.

Flings would have been denied a national record anyway because the following wind was over 2.0 m/s; the wind also disallows her time for being acceptable as a World Championship and Olympic Games qualifier.

High-school phenom Suzie Acolatse responded more than adequately with her own fastest-ever time, running 11.46s; unfortunately, she was also deprived of a personal best by a following wind greater than 2.0 m/s.

[link id=”745″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Emmanuel Dasor”] was blessed by acceptable winds when he ran two sensational races to double as 200m/400m champion in the Conference-USA Championships.

His performances of 20.61s in the 200m and 45.61s in the 400m are both [link id=”644″ tax=”post_tag” text=”African Games”] qualifiers, and bring him only inches away from the World Championship qualifying times.

Both times are the fastest run by a Ghanaian athlete in many years, and he is the first Ghanaian to break into the 45-second zone since the late 1990s.

Defending NJCAA National Champion Janet Amponsah was hampered by a 6-hour rain delay before the finals of the sprint finals, but left the competition with lightning-fast times of 11.29s and 23.56s in the heats of the 100m and 200m, respectively.

Below are the latest [link id=”344″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Ghana Athletics Association”] (GAA) rankings:
