Johan Rogestedt from Sweden shocks Africa at the WYC in Bressanone/Brixen in front of his idol and two-times Olympic champion Sebastian Coe.
This 16-year-old is the first European ever to win this championship title. Josè Reynaldo Bencosme de Leon won bronze in the 400m hurdles winning Italy's third medal. The stadium was filled to capacity with over 5000 spectators.
Tomorrow the WYC will come to conclusion with the last eleven medal events.
Girls: 5km Race Walk
The Russian Elena Lashmanova has dominated the 5km Walk setting a new WYL with 22:55.45. Yanelli Caballero (22:59.27) is a former sprinter and out-walked Svetlana Vasilyeva (23:00.15) in the last few meters of the race preventing a dual Russian win.
Girls: 1500m
Amela Terzic from Serbia prevented the 1500m to be a purely African event. She won bronze with 4:16.71. The new World Champion is Nelly Chebet Ngeiywo (4:12.76) and comes from Kenya ahead of Gete Dima (4:15.16) from Ethiopia.
Boys: Triple Jump
Supanara S.N.A. from Thailand is the first athlete to win a second medal in Bressanone/Brixen. He followed his gold in the long jump with a silver in the triple jump (15.70m). Benjamin Williams won gold with 15.91m. Third placed Aleksandr Yurchenko from Russia with a jump of 15.66m.
Girls: Pole Vault
Sweden dominated this category. Angelica Bengtsson was very convincing by being the first to clear the bar this year at 4.32m.
This is 22cm higher than her team mate Michaela Meijer. Bronze went ex-equo to Tatyana Stetsyuk from Russia and Felicia Horvath from Hungary (both with 4.00m). This was a first for this WYC.
Boys: 800m
A European win in a middle distance event is a first in this age category. Johan Rogestedt from Sweden is only 16 years old and surprised the African field in front of his personal idol and Olympic Champion Sebastian Coe winning the gold with a time of 1:50.92.
Silver and bronze went to Peter Langat Kiplagat (1:50.97) and Nicholas Kiplangat Kipkoech (1:51.01) from Kenya, respectively.
Girls: Javelin Throw
Uzbekistan won it's first medal yesterday. Today that record was re-inforced with Anastasiya Svechnikova's wining throw of 53.25m. You Wu (52.04m) and Laura Henkel (51.47m) rounded out the podium.
Girls: Heptathlon
Gold went to the WYL of 5750 set by Katarina Thompson from Britain. Laura Ikuaniece from Latvia (5647) won silver and was followed by Kira Biesenbach from Germany (5423).
Boys: Shot Put
Ryan Crouser must have thought that he can do what Supanara S.N.A. from Thailand can do. But he did it the other way round. Crouser won the gold in the shot put after winning silver in the discus.
He set a new CR with 21.56m Krzystof Brzozowski from Poland (20.89m) had to be satisfied with silver. Bronze went to Frans Schutte from South Africa (20.37m).
Girls: 400m Hurdles
Vera Rudakova from Russia achieved in the finals what she had done in the semifinals, setting the new WYL at 57.83 and, thereby, securing the gold.
She finished with a phenomenal sprint. Danielle Dowie (Jamaica/58.62) followed with a considerable distance on second place. Bronze went to Deborah Rodriguez (59.71) who won the second WYC medal ever for Uruguay.
High Jump: Boys
Dmitriy Kroyter came, saw and won – and never lost his cool. Kroyter won the first WYC medal for Israel always succeeding in clearing the bar up to 2.20m at his first attempt.
He was followed by Janick Klausen (2.20m) who also won his first medal, in silver, for Denmark. He cleared 2.20m, but it took six fails along the way. Jdango Lovett from Canada and Daniil Tsyplakov shared the bronze with 2.17m.
Boys: 400m Hurdles
He might not be related to high jump record holder Javier Sotomayor, but Norge Sotomayor has everthing it takes to be just a great athlete. The Cuban won the 400m hurdles in a WYL of 51.30s ahead of Jeremiah Kipkorir Mutai from Kenya (51.45).
Josè Reynaldo Bencosme de Leon was born in the Dominican Republic and runs for Italy winning its third medal today with a time of 51.74. Bencosme lives in Italy (Cuneo) and is starting for Italy since January this year.
Girls: Discus
The last gold medal on this second to last day of the WYC went to Shanshan with a winning throw of 51.65m. Alex Collatz from the USA won silver with 50.09m and bronze went to Shanice Craft who won Germany's third medal on this day (49.15m).
