South African team named for World Half Marathon 2009 in Birmingham

By Yomi Omogbeja, 15 September, 2009

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has announced a team of six men and three women for the 18th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships which will be held in Birmingham, England, on 11 October.

The men's team will be finalized at a later stage as only five runners are allowed to start the Championships.

The team was selected after the very successful Nedbank SA Half Marathon Championships in Port Elizabeth when runners produced some of the best times seen for a long time in the country. The provisional team selected then competed in the Nedbank SA 10km Championships in Stellenbosch recently to prove their fitness.

Three of the team members, Stephen Mokoka (AGN), Jeffrey Gwebu (CGA) and Lindikhaya Mthangayi (WPA) also represented South Africa at last year's World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The other members of the six man group are Mbongeni Ngxazozo (CGA), Xolisa Tyali (CGA) and Olebogeng Masire (ACNW).

The women's team consists of SA Champion, Annerien van Schalkwyk (AGN) and Rene Kalmer and Poppy Mlambo both from Central Gauteng.

Team list:
