The African Region Two Track and Field Championships, which holds this weekend in Makurdi, will be keenly contested following a record entry by nine West African countries.

Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Technical and Performance Director, Sunday Bada, said he expected stiff competition from the participants in the two-day meet to be held at the Aper Aku Stadium.

According to Bada more entries were being expected before the close of registration later on Tuesday for the championships opening on Friday.

The nine countries that have entered for the competition are Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Togo, Liberia, Benin Republic, Gambia, and Mali.

Bada expressed AFN's gratitude to Gov. Gabriel Suswam for agreeing to host the competition.

Nigeria finished second behind Senegal at the last edition of the championships held in Port-Novo, Benin Republic in 2009.
